Employee of the month...

John Roughley started out working at a photographic laboratory in the pre digital age. He explains, "It was a small
company so I got to move around and see the different aspects of the job. The lab used to process work for professional
photographers, so I've probably seen more wedding and school photographs than most people do in a lifetime!"
Even after 20 years he still 'scans' pictures really quickly and always looks at what paper they are printed on. John
then moved on to work at a pharmaceutical company and a logistics firm, before joining local government in 1999.
John joined the leisure department at Wigan Council before looking after the council's internet pages and then moving
on to social services - now (Adult services) as a communications officer, with responsibility for internal communications.
Career highlights for John include being involved in some of the planning for the year 2000 millennium bug problems and
the implementation of elearning at Wigan Council. Something he wouldn't like to repeat is working in -27 degrees in a
distribution centre!
John likes how e learning technology brings people together. He says, "Enabling learning and development to reach large
numbers of people, including those in the hard-to -reach areas is key". He stresses that demonstrating a return on
investment is vital. "It's too easy to get carried away technology side or elearning, technology is easy, but it's the
people that matter."
He explains that Learning Pool is in a unique position as we specialize in the public sector, we understand the problems
faced in local government and are able to offer solutions. "Ultimately though, it comes down to the partnership Learning
Pool has with its customers. We give our customers the tools and knowledge they need to successfully implement elearning
and then support them throughout."
John is currently looking at collaboration opportunities for customers as well as looking at new ways our DLE can be
used to support learners.
